A musical interlude!

This section was inspired by Paul Holmes (Local Government Service Group General Seat) who said that music taste gives an insight into the person so..... here's a few, as my daughter would say, "random" Top 10's!

LPs

1.  The Slider - T.Rex
Truth be known, a true record of my Top 10 LPs & singles are ALL by Marc Bolan & T.Rex.  Marc mastermined Glam, inspired punk & his music is still as fresh today as he was 40 years ago. Metal Guru & Spaceball Ricochet (live) demonstrate 2 different phases of the masterpiece that is the Slider!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHbHn2GP8Ns

2.  Rubber Soul - the Beatles
I could have chosen virtually any of the Beatles LPs, John Lennon's collection or at a stretch an early Wings album but the cathartic In Your Life has to be on the list
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suuU3mliNo8

3.  Power in the Darkness - T.R.B.
Tom Robinson Band certainly hit the spot when it come to reflecting the angry young
men / women.  Later music from TR was a more introspective - the best live act of the time - Up Against the Wall
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXWR1sYDgGk

4.  Word Gets Around - Stereophonics
With the Manics & Catatonia a rich vein of talent emerged from South Wales in the 90's and this track was what the word 'classic rock' was invented for - A Thousand Trees
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-S1o5OmMMo

5.  Non-Stop Erotic Dancing - Soft Cell
Marc 2 - burst on to the scene with a cover of a Northern Soul classic by Marc 1's partner, Gloria Jones.  I really enjoy this naff 80's video of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEYr4eBseF4

6.  The Kick Inside - Kate Bush
I didn't like the book, I hated the film but the record was out of this world - Wuthering
Heights...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pMMIe4hb4

7.  Bad - Michael Jackson
The choice of LP is probably influenced by the one of the best concerts I have seen, at Aintree Racecourse.  The lyrics of Man in the Mirror should be essential listening for politicians!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEQAie8ABLE

8.  Levelling the Land - Levellers
Forced going to see this band unknown to me at Liverpool Uni about 1991.  Came out a fan & this track became a regular of "I only sing when I'm drinking" repetoire! One Way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XScq7NLRnYU

9.  That's Life - Sham 69
Loved this album as a kid & Jimmy Pursey is a passionate performer much harrassed by
his early skinhead following.  Angels with Dirty Faces
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNmW1mq-n_s

10.  Rock Me Baby - David Cassidy.
I kept it quiet for years but was eventually found out! This track Song For A Rain Day I sang
to my daughter within an hour of her birth - she's never forgiven me!

Singles

1. Teenage Dream - Marc Bolan & T.Rex
Since the tender age of 12 when 1st T.Rex single the music of Marc Bolan has lived with me ever since.  And, at 14, I heard the greatest 5 minutes ever put to vinyl!
http://www.youtube.com/watchv=gj5V16c6pRM

2. London Calling - The Clash
An inspiring song which is a fine example of the finest band of the punk rock era.
In contrast to my previous choice if I win this election this will be on my turntable
with a pint of Wilkin's finest Somerset Cider!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfK-WX2pa8c

 3. Back to Black - Amy Whitehouse
A truly beautiful melancholic song from a tragic genius. If I lose this election I can
certainly envisage me with a glass of malt listening to this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJAfLE39ZZ8

4. The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen
I was lucky to be part of the "Eric's"generation in Liverpool which spawned
so many 80's luminaries. This track has been credited as the best song ever written
but it was Ian McCulloch that said so!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmpyG9EZ8PI

5. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next - Manic Street Preachers
Absolute warning! masterpiece!!
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX8szNPgrEs

6. Gold - Spandau Ballet
I always wanted hair like Tony Hadley but "those were my salad days, now they've
been eaten away"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntG50eXbBtc

7. Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis
I always argue with myself about whether Oasis , The Smiths or the Buzzcocks
are  the best band from Manchester?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8OipmKFDeM

 8. Heroes - David Bowie
Difficult to choose from Bowie's collection but I love this version which  is
particularly poignant as it was performed on the last 'marc' show &
broadcast the week of Marc Bolan's death in 1977.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkJeClpQ8zQ

9. Do Anything You Wanna Do - Eddie & the Hotrods
This was my theme tune in my 1st job "Tired of doing day jobs..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weQ4oNk7Pqc

10. Imperial Wizzard - David Essex
Another of my guilty pleasures & an anti-imperialist song coming from an
unexpected quarter.

  1. I thought that TRex would be number one Bernie! 'The Slider' one of the first LP's I ever bought and the first single definitely 'The Groover'. Definitely stood the test of time (and so have TRex).

    1. The chart should have read SINGLES - Teenage Dream, Metal Guru, Children of the Revolution, Soul of my Suit, Hot Love, Get It On, 20th Century Boy, Solid Gold Easy Action, Jeepster, Laser Love... ALBUMS: Slider, Dandy in the Underworld, Electric Warrior, Unicorn, Futuristic Dragon, Zinc Alloy & the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow, Bolan Boogie, My People Were Fair Had The Sky In Their Hair, But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows, Bolan's Zip Gun, T.Rex..... but I decided to act a bit more eclectically!
